Originally from the city, my love of horses began when I met my late husband Owen. He had come from Owen Downs in north western NSW, where breaking in horses and using them on the property was a part of life. Our three daughters Tammy, Karen and Robyn were of course ‘born in the saddle’. They could ride almost before they could walk and rode with Owen and myself on our property at Mathoura and later attended the Pretty Pine pony club under the instruction of a close friend and exceptional horseman the late Tom Loy and his wife Mary. In early 1997 while giving the girls riding lessons Tom mentioned to us the Tom Quilty Gold Cup, and how he always wanted to ride in one. He encouraged us to give endurance riding a go, noting that one of our mares Glenelen Park Tamara (Haboob * Desert Haze) was the ideal type for the job with her willingness and stamina. After only a few rides, we had caught the bug (as you do) and in 1998 both Karen and Robyn completed the Quilty in SA. Our youngest, Robyn (now 25), continued competing in endurance rides between 1998 and 2003. At present, she is more focused on breeding, having many of her own horses (possibly more Arabians than myself, but I try not to count them). She is breeding for the ideal endurance horse, which she hopes to compete on in the future after she finishes her studies. Robyn is jointly involved in the stud and breeding program, and finds it hard having to be away at university for so much of the year. I work full time as a teacher and am finding I can’t give enough time to the horses and ponies we love so much.
